About upgrades and notification mailings

Poetic’s automated upgrade function allows you to set up multiple criteria and then perform a scheduled action based on those criteria.

The most common use of the automated upgrade function is to automatically provide upgrades to users who have up-to-date maintenance for a specific product.

Poetic supports the following types of upgrade jobs:

  • Paid upgrades, where users purchase an upgrade product in order to be able to upgrade. Poetic marks the eligible entitlements and machines or registration certificates as upgradeable. Users are notified that the upgrade is available, and go through an activation process to obtain the upgrade.
  • Free upgrades, where users receive the upgrade free of charge. Poetic can mark entitlements and machines or registration certificates as upgradeable, generate Poetic upgrade orders, generate a shipping information file, or automatically implement the upgrade. Users are notified that the upgrade is available, and may need to go through an activation process to obtain the upgrade.
  • Notification mailings, where users only receive a notification. For notification mailings, there is no effect on entitlements or machines or registration certificates.

When you create a new job, you need to:

  • Set the job output for free or paid upgrades

  • Configure eligibility criteria for the upgrade job

  • Configure upgrade mappings for free or paid upgrades

  • Configure validation requirements for paid upgrades

  • Configure notifications for upgrade jobs

  • Create the schedule for executing the upgrade job

After configuring the job, you can then run the upgrade job. You can either validate the job or execute the job. When you validate the job, it is run immediately. When you execute the job, it is run using the schedule configured for the job.

When the job is executed, Poetic marks the entitlements or machines or registration certificates, sends the notifications, or generates the orders or shipping file.

When the job is no longer needed, you can make the job inactive.

You can also export the job configuration. For example, you can configure and run a job on a test system, then use the export function to copy the job to a production system.
